Monkey Forest, Ubud

Let’s be honest, you can’t go to Bali with out visiting Ubud. A strong statement yes, but it’s a justified one! One of my must-see attractions in Ubud is the Monkey Forest. The entry fee is 50,000rp and it takes around half an hour to walk around the whole forest.

I like monkeys but they are very unpredictable. Especially when tourists with loose belongings are around. The innocent looking angel on the left had actually just stolen a bottle of water from a lady, and poured the contents on the floor.

When you enter the forest, there is a banana stand for the monkeys. It’s 20,000 for a small bunch and they make great photo opportunities. If you decide to buy a bunch, make sure you quickly put them in your bag. You will get swarmed and loose them otherwise. They may look sweet, but they are very quick to show their teeth when denied food.

The forest has some amazing stone carvings and structures. The bridge in the photo above is actually built into a tree, and the tree has formed its vines around it. It is like something out of Jungle Book, very fairy tale and magical.

Be mindful when standing under trees that there isn’t a monkey above you. They will wee on you on purpose. I am talking from experience here.

Towards the end of our walk around the forest, we saw a large cage with a lone monkey inside. I thought it was the monkey hospital but it was actually home to Wilson. Wilson unfortunately lost his eyesight from fighting. He has had two surgeries to try and recover his eyes but with no results. He is a very sociable monkey and loves being scratched under his chin. He also knows his name and loves the interaction with the tourists.

If he went back out into the forest it wouldn’t be safe for him, as the others wouldn’t accept him. Seeing Wilson was my favourite part of the monkey forest. I wanted to take him with me. If you are thinking of visiting here, be sure to give him a hello and a chin scratch from me.

  1. I worked at a preschool at one point and we had taken the kids to the zoo. I was holding a sweet 4 year old and the gorilla flung feces onto him. No fun 🙂

  2. Hi Emily,

Wilson sounds like a cute little guy. Be careful and I hope you avoid the wee and the teeth. Too much like little precocious kids, right?

  3. I went to Ubud last December. While I did not visit the Monkey Forest, I really enjoyed getting away from beaches, which are very touristy. We took a bike ride through the mountains. It was so wonderful!
