Plentiful fruits and vegetables where little grows

Living in the outback of Queensland, Australia, you quickly learn that the freezer is your best friend when it comes to food. Bulk buying and freezing is definitely the way to go when you’re working every day and the nearest supermarket takes an hour and a half to get to. To be honest, at first it was quite a difficult adjustment. Coming from Bristol with a whopping population of an estimated 450,000, convenience is something I definitely took for granted. In contrast, our nearest town Glenmorgan, and its surrounding area had a total of 148 people. As you can imagine there weren’t too many places to get your groceries.

Going to the shop to buy freshly baked bread bread then paying next to nothing for it, is something I wouldn’t think twice about at home. However over here, the bread we usually bought was already frozen to maintain is freshness as long as possible. In Glenmorgan there is a small shop, a church and a pub. So when I was asked if I wanted to go to the fruit and veg van, I was only expecting a small transit van.

That’s when I met Team Fruit and Vege. What a brilliant idea and such a fantastic shop to have access to! Twice a week, the team travels around central Queensland to set up shop in the main towns. Reasonably priced and freshly produced I was very happy to shop here.

The business is run by a couple and their adorable dog who believe it or not, is just a puppy.

Buying our food this way has definitely made me appreciate how easy it is to buy food at home. It also makes you cut down on waste which is always a good thing!
