Okay so this is a little bit of an odd place to visit and perhaps a bit creepy, but beauty can be found any where, and there was a lot to be found at the Montparnasse Cemetery. I came across this cemetery whilst researching the area after visiting the catacombs. Well known for its abstract and to be honest, slightly bizarre memorials, it looked like an interesting place to visit.
Originally created from three farms in 1824 and containing 35,000 graves, this cemetry is huge. The original windmill can still be found in the centre of the cemetery.
A search on Instagram and you will find hundreds of photos of the strange memorials. Because of the size of the place, we didn’t get to find all of the ones we wanted to. Also we were running out of day light, and walking around a cemetery in the dark isn’t really our cup of tea.
Here’s some of the ones we missed I’ve taken from Instagram. My favourite, and the one I’m a bit annoyed about missing, is Ricardo the cat. We underestimated how big the cemetery was and thought 45 minutes would be enough time to find them all. Whoops.
Not creepy at all, we love a cemetery. Such fascinating places and this one looks amazing.

Great stuff. Thanks for the tour. I haven’t been in Paris since 1977.

Some great photos.. my husband loves a good cemetery, especially the old colonial ones. It makes you realise that people travelled hundreds of years ago also.

Hello Emily,
What an amazing place. Someone really knew how to spice up the history in that cemetery.
Thank you,
Gary
