The Eiffel Tower, Paris

One of the first things that comes to mind when thinking of Paris, and France really, is the Eiffel Tower.

Originally built in 1887, this sculpture was only meant to be temporary as part of the worldwide exhibition. The creator, Gustave Eiffel, had planned to destroy it twenty years after the exhibition ended. However, in 1900 the French Navy added a radio antenna, saving it from destruction. With the antenna now making it 324m tall, the tower would forever be a part of Paris.

If you’re planning a visit here be warned, it is very busy, but it’s definitely worth doing. As the fourth most visited monument in the world, you can’t visit Paris and not see the tower can you?

The last time I saw the tower was when I was about 13 years old. I actually remember it being a different colour from the brown I saw on my visit and funnily enough it probably was. Every seven years the tower is painted with a special paint to stop corrosion. The last time I visited it I remember it being grey so it must of been freshly painted.

Seeing as this was in November, were so lucky with the weather. Blue skies with a small chill in the air, it was the perfect day to stroll around Paris.

  4. Tangent: Your thoughts on the Notre Dame Cathedral? I’ve been watching footage of it burning down, and I’m monumentally bummed that I’ll never see the original structure.

    1. It’s awful, it broke my heart seeing Parisians praying and waiting for it to stop. The Dame survived two wars, it’s truly shocking. Do we know what caused the fire yet?

      1. All I’ve seen lately is that the cause is still unknown. The cathedral was undergoing renovations and something may have accidentally ignited. I’m shocked as well. So tragic.

  5. I am reading this post just after the fire in Notre Dame. You never know what will happen to these icons and it is wonderful to take them in when you can. Thanks for being an ambassador of travel.

    1. French food is amazing! The patisseries are incredible… Probably best I don’t have one accessible at home because I would triple in size ha ha!

  10. I had read that Gustave had to fight the authority’s to erect the tower, funding it himself. However, he added a codecil that he would take a percentage of the takings for the next 20 years. He made quite a profit…
