Day 4 – Birmingham AL to Folsom LA

Being from one of the most notoriously rainiest places on the planet, it felt quite comforting seeing that miserable drizzle outside. We had a lot of driving to do today and as this trip was in a car, the rain didn’t bother us too much.

For breakfast we went to Cracker Barrel again and again, I got the fried chicken. At this rate I don’t think my clothes are going to fit me when we get back to the farm. (Spolier alert, they didn’t)

With it being a Sunday, the restaurant was very busy so we were in there much longer than we anticipated. This meant we had to do a much longer stint of driving than planned as we had booked a gorgeous Air BnB and wanted to make it there before the sun went down.

The stops I did want to make were unfortunately all closed. One of these was the Simmons-Wright Company Store. This store dates all the way back to the 1800s and over the years its been running little has changed. What is particularly interesting about this store, is they still have the antique cash register which is still in working order today. They now have a café attached to the store so it would make the perfect stop for those on a road trip… Just not for us on a Sunday! If you want to find out more can find the link here.

After quite a long and uneventful day of driving we made it to our Air BnB which was called The Ritz We Aint. The name was definitely misleading as this was my favourite place we stayed for the entire trip. Its a converted barn which they still use for their horses so we had some room mates for the evening.

When we arrived our host had come down to put the heaters and lights on for us which was such a thoughtful and kind thing to do. We wandered around the barn in amazement, dumped our bags and pet the horses before going to the nearest take out.

The horses were very quiet and well behaved, we didn’t hear a peep from them at all in the night. The only time they made a noise was when the treat jar came out.

We had an early night and watched a film in bed. I really wanted to stay here another night it was so wonderful, if I’m ever in this area again I’m definitely staying here! For anyone interested, you can find their Instagram here.

    1. Not at all, it was very clean. The hosts went to a great effort to keep it spick and span for us 😁
We actually drove all the way to Florida then back and we made it in one piece! 😂

  1. Enjoying your posts, popping into places in the US and Canada which until now have been known to me only by name or spots on the map. Doing a good job of covering as much of the planet as possible !!
