Day 15 – Daytona Beach FL – Charleston SC

Even if the sky is cloudy, waking up to an ocean view is always a great way to start the day.

We started off the morning with a free coffee from the hotel and a walk a long Daytona Beach. Getting down there was a little awkward as every hotel seemed to be under construction but we got there eventually!

As it was December, we were here for the off season so I imagine those of you who have visited Daytona Beach before are thinking it’s looking very deserted.

Before we left, of course we had to pay our respects to the town dog, Brownie. Owned by no one but loved by all, Brownie was a short haired, brown and white dog who lived in the town of Daytona Beach in the 1940s – 1950s. This beloved dog was so popular and well looked after, he would be mentioned in numerous magazines and newspapers, receive Christmas presents and cards, have his own bank account and receive visitors from all over the US. One day Brownie was unfortunately a victim of a hit and run. He was rushed to the vet and the whole community came together to heal Brownie and get him back on his feet (or paws). He fully recovered from the incident with the help and love of the town but was left with a slight limp afterwards. When he passed from old age in 1954, the town was so heartbroken they laid him to rest with a proper burial and gravestone and had a memorial made for him. 70 years later this dog still holds the town’s heart and is still attracting visitors from all over.

As we were on a tight schedule, today consisted of a lot of driving. We only managed to squeeze in one touristy spot which was the Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island, Georgia.

This beach got its unique look from years of erosion which revealed many weathered trees. Walking a long this beach was like exploring another world, it was so beautiful. I loved it here and it is now officially my favourite beach. If you ever visit here, please make sure you wear shoes!

We eventually got to South Carolina which was our 10th state of this trip and checked into our little Air BnB. It was called The Backpackers Inn which got me wondering, are you still considered a backpacker if you’re using a suitcase with wheels?

We went for dinner to a near by Chinese restaurant where a man was getting arrested outside for being too intoxicated, fighting and attempting to drive. When I say the whole restaurant was watching, I really mean it. Everyone kept scurrying over to the window to have a look and report back to their table on the progress of the arrest. It was pretty funny but embarrassing for the guy getting arrested… Then again, he was so drunk I really don’t think his observational skills were up to par that night.

To finish off our evening we watched a scary movie in our little hut which was great until I had to use the loo. It was across the yard to get to the bathroom so running across the yard with just a torch was a bit scary!

As always thank you so much for reading. If you enjoyed this post please let me know by leaving a like, comment or buying me a coffee. Also make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss the next post!

  1. What a great little cabin. That driftwood beach looks interesting.

Jekyll Island is known for being where a secret meeting took place with bankers and other corrupt heavy hitters where the dark and toxic Federal Reserve was launched. There’s a book about it – ” The Creature From Jekyll Island.”

Glad you had such a great trip.
