This morning we couldn’t get out of the hotel fast enough. We were in the car by 7am and for good reason. The hotel we stayed at was very different to the one I booked online. When we arrived, we had to wait almost an hour to get checked in, our room smelt like pee, the floor felt sticky, the bathroom had hair in the corners where someone had done a terrible job of sweeping (not a huge deal I know but it adds to the list) and there were people who were drunk/high hanging out on the balcony. They didn’t give us any trouble but it wasn’t great to be around. We were so uncomfortable that we slept on our towels, put t-shirts over our pillows and had a really good scrub before leaving.
Although off to a bad start, today was a much better day as we were renting a Harley Davidson to ride down the Florida Keys.
We used Rider Share for the first time which is a great website for renting a motorcycle. It’s like an air bnb for motorcycles and very easy to use.

We got chatting to the renter, Louis as he excitedly showed us the bike’s features and made us wish we were buying instead of renting it. When he started it up, the radio was blasting and Eiffel 95 – Blue was playing! I’ve never rode a bike with speakers so now I had a real problem… What songs to play?!
Louis was so kind he said we could leave our car parked on his drive whilst we were away. We thanked him again and quickly gathered up our gear and were on our way.

Of course I would of much rather of done this trip on my own bike but to keep the costs low, I was on the back for this one. I have decided we’re coming back this way in the future because this ride was incredible. To ride across the ocean and see that wonderful blue on both sides was phenomenal.

Louis advised us that the best place to go for lunch was the Shark Shack and to get the Mahi Mahi fingers. We got talking to the waitress and she told us that the past few days the weather has been absolutely awful, it had been pouring down so we really lucked out with the weather and the fish fingers here.

Something especially unique about the Florida Keys is that there are wild chickens roaming around. This little one was desperate to get on the Harley. That was until it started up of course!
We then stopped to see Betsy the lobster. She isn’t that largest lobster, that’s Leon but she’s pretty close!

We arrived at the Koa campsite which was absolutely perfect. There were lots of amenities and it was really quiet. We set up our tent as fast as we could and were quickly on our way to continue riding all the way to the southern most point.

When we finally got there, we didn’t realise it would be so popular and there would be a que. I had to quickly snap this in between people standing infront of it so there are some people there who have been cropped out.

For dinner we had the conch trio. Which is a must if you are in Florida Keys as the conch is their speciality.
The next must for food is the key lime pie! Shamefully I could of eaten three of these….

To finish off our evening and explore the town in the best way possible, we went on a ghost tour.

This was so much fun and really interesting learning about the history and ghost stories of Key West. We were shown all of the murder sites, grave sites and ghostly apparitions. It was a great way to see and learn about the island from a quirky local, whilst in the comfort of your seat.

When we eventually got back to our campsite it was very windy but the temperature wasn’t bad. We tucked ourselves into our sleeping bags and after such an exciting day and awful sleep the night before, we were both passed out within 2 minutes.

After Jimmy Buffett died, I read all his books available in the library and all his albums on Spotify. Key West was a long time home and influence of his. Looks like an amazing drive. A close friend lived there, too.

I so hate smelly hotel rooms, both the pee smelling and the over perfumed ones, that I tow my own little bed around. Admittedly, it smells like my dogs and it has some hair, but it’s my own filth.
Don’t you just love Leon?!

Having always had dogs in the family and working with them, I find the smell comforting and would much rather have it than pee! 😂 I usually bring a silk sleeping bag but annoyingly forgot it on this trip. Lessons learned I guess! 😂
I adore Leon! ❤️

Emily,
Sorry about the hotel. We have had some weird and yucky stuff, too. It’s a crap shoot but at least other stuff was good. Adventure is just one step away,

looks like a brilliant day! sometimes we end up in these kind of motels/hotels. I’ve been in a couple where I couldnt leave quick enough. You can never be 100% sure until you are in the room what you are getting

Absolutely! I think this one is the worst one for me although I did stay in one place in Bali, where they had cigarette butts in the shower and I got eaten alive by mosquitoes… Hmmm… maybe its a tie with the two ha ha
